One K A Day

So for the month of August, I will be posting one picture per day from my Hurricane Katrina aftermath photo collection, in no particular order. First up, the debris pile gathered up on the neutral ground between West End and Pontchartrain boulevards. Probably taken in the middle of October, 2005.

I tried to drive from uptown to Canal Blvd sometime that fall to help friends salvage what they could from their house. I ended up trapped in the temporary trash community on Marconi across from Delgado. It took me awhile to figure out how to get out; I wish I had taken photos there.

Damn. Mount Lakeview got pretty high. Looking at that grassy expanse there now, one could almost never guess there had been that much debris there nearly three years ago.

Thanks, Pete. It was a dreadful, overwhelming time that will stay with all of us for all the rest of our lives. Yet specific memories will fade, and our energy for change will lessen…so it’s a good idea to refresh our memories of How Things Looked After the Storm.

I remember that mountain of debris. I thought they were ever get it out of there. I look at the neutral ground, today, and it still doesn’t look like it’s old self. That was the best part of living in Lakeview the wide open spaces in which to walk the dog.
